Hot Springs is a nature lover’s destination offering hiking, fishing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, mountain biking and healing mineral springs. Located just 45 minutes north of Asheville, this charming historical town is located at the junction of the Appalachian Trail and the French Broad River in a valley surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and Pisgah National Forest.
Laurel River Trail – located right out the front door of the Riverbend Cottage. An easy and very scenic, 7 mile hike roundtrip.
Appalachian Trail – You can hike the famous path right out of downtown up to Lovers Leap Ridge for spectacular views back down on the town and river. Or you can pick up the AT trail 3 miles from Riverbend Cottage, and hike 5.8 moderate miles into downtown hot springs.
Lovers LeapTrail can be combined with the AT to form a loop hike. These trails start at the Silvermine Trailhead parking area, just across the French Broad River Bridge from downtown Hot Springs. Also starting at the Silvermine Trailhead parking is the Pump Gap Loop Trial which also intersects the AT in several places.
Several other trails within 5-10 miles of downtown, include the Roundtop Ridge, Betty Place, Shut-In, Van Cliff, Spring Creek, Mille Ridge, Golden Ridge, River Ridge, and Jack Branch trails.
Laurel River – Welcomes spin casters, bait fisherman, and fly fisherman. Year round fishing, great for trout and small mouth bass. For more detailed information on fishing the Big Laurel River and other spots in Madison County visit their website.
Kayaking/White Water Rafting/Tubing
Laurel River is classified as class II and IV whitewater. French Broad offers kayaking, rafting, tubing. For more information on paddling adventures visit the following outfitters.
Mill RidgeTrail – Located only 3 miles from cottage. A 3.5 mile loop of single and double track. For more detailed information and a map to the trailhead or other trails in the area please visit www.trails.com.
